Friends of Slaithwaite Millpond have gathered to restore and preserve this historical watercourse in the heart of the village. Known locally as “The Dam” the location holds many a fond memory for those that misguidedly swam and paddled about many moons ago. Rewind further and those that lived and worked here would have relied upon the water power provided in so many ways.
Long since obsolescent as a source of energy to power the mills, the watercourse has fallen into disrepair. The watercourse that birthed modern day Slaithwaite is in danger of disappearing entirely. The infrastructure is in ruins, the upper pond has turned to marsh and the lower pond barely supports the little aquatic life that remains. Time is of the essence and there is much to do.
Our ambition is to restore and preserve our local heritage, whilst potentially redefining hydropower in a modern setting. Perhaps more importantly, we wish to create a sustainable ecosystem that fits seamlessly into the wider context of the Colne Valley.
